 It was a surprise when Robin Smith was dropped permanently from the England Test squad after the tour of South Africa in 1995-96. This was despite having the best batting average among his contemporaries. Many felt that Smith was harshly dealt by the board. Smith ended his Test career with 4236 runs at an average of 43.67.
